News: Eclipse and Airbender clean up

Both The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and The Last Airbender had excellent opening weekends, with the third in the tween-vamp series grossing US$82.5 million over the Independence Day weekend and Shyamalan’s adaptation of the brilliant American anime series grossing US$53.2 million. Both films opened midweek, with their total grosses at $175.3 million and $70.5 million respectively.

Eclipse was never going to be a box office bust, and critics have been somewhat kinder to it than previous installments, with new recruit director David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) giving the film a bit more heft and credibility. The Last Airbender, however, was absolutely roasted by critics (8% on Rotten Tomatoes) but still managed an almost respectable weekend gross. The film, derided as hollow, confusing and misguided, had a US$150 million production budget (Source: BoxOfficeMojo) and looks to at least be financially viable and will probably break even.
